The finish for Shell Briar Dunhill pipes was patented in the United States in 1920.
The pipes were double blasted until the 1960s and then the double blast technique resumed during the 1980s, referring to it as the 'Deep Shell' finish.
During the 1960s and 70s, Dunhill could not acquire the Algerian briar which means that the sandblast pipes were much shallower. Dunhill showed once again that they are innovators in the tobacco industry, with the creation of the 'double blast' technique to bring about a deeper blast even with harder briar.
This amazing finish new finish took its name from how the sandblasting removed softer parts of the briar to reveal the stunning shell-like patterns within the grain.
The briar is carefully selected as a softer wood is better suited to obtain the craggy surface and is prepared by being oil treated to strengthen and enhance the grain of a Shell pipe.
Alfred Dunhill is famous for supplying briar smoking pipes to a wide range of clientele across the world since 1904.
