Product Description

No 7 Broken Flake is one of Gawith Hoggarths staples when it comes to Lakeland flakes. While this is not too far away from Ennerdale in its composition, it is no way near as heavily flavoured, or a as floral. This medium strength blend is comprised of mainly flue cured Virginias with the addition of a little dark air cured and a dash of burley. Without the topping this blend is smooth and packed full of grassy flavours, with a little leather and dirt from the air cured. The burley does very little in the sense of the flavour profile, but does keep the blend cool and smooth to smoke.

The honey dew toppings are enough to add a little extra flavour to the smoke and the use of Vanilla is barely noticeable and if we weren’t told it was there, we would never have guessed. Unlike many of the lakelands from this iconic producers, the topping die down as you smoke, leaving the natural beauty of the tobacco.

As with all Lakeland blends, Conniston ghosts Briar pipes and it is best to have a separate pipe dedicated for Lakelands. Ghosting fades with time from any pipe, but do expect your next few smokes to have a slight Lakeland note. Do not let this put you off trying Conniston or any other Lakeland blend, these pre-aromatic blends hark back to simpler time where the smoker was assured of natural tobacco taste with some subtle fragrant nuances.

  1. Honey goodness 4 Star Review

Posted by on 1st Feb 2022

No 7 is one of my favourite blends. The tin note is in my opinion sublime. Rich honey with some floral and lovely grassy notes. Nowhere near as perfumed as some Lakeland blends. This is much more natural, with the casings working to enhance the top notes beautifully. These come through in the taste in a quite harmonious way. The room note is also excellent.

My only criticism is that I would prefer slightly more richness from some darker, cured leaves to add a little cigar taste and smell. But overall, this is a very fine blend that while being lighter than some of the traditional Lakelands, such as Conniston, still provides nice complexity and a lot of enjoyment.
