Gawith Hoggarths Balkan Mixture is one of the most popular Balkan blends produced in the UK. Comprised of a mixture of flue and sun cured Virginia’s with a generous helping of Cypriot Latakia. Unlike most other Balkan blends, this is made with only the single Oriental, Latakia and makes no use of other Oriental/Turkish tobaccos. Even without these, the blend still have the spicy taste thank to the dark air cured Indian tobacco.
From the pouch this beautiful looking ribbon mixture, has a deep and smoky aroma. The ribbon cuts makes for easy packing and lighting. Of course it’s the smoking is where it matters and this blend doesn’t disappoint. The blend is very smooth and packed full of spicy, leathery, smoky and slightly salty flavours. Smokes cool thanks to the Dark Virginias and Latakia, and remains smooth even if smoked too hard.

I taste Orientals in this blend
This blend is superb ! The information says it doesn’t contain any other tobaccos other then Virginias and Latakia. I am certain I can detect Turkish Izmir . Commonwealth blend is just Virginia / Latakia in equal proportions BUT Balkan Mixture really does have that Turkish Izmir taste and redolence . Whatever the tobaccos in this blend , it’s a damn fine all day smoke which has become one of my very favourites
