When we first heard about this tobacco from our friend Sgt Matron at the Kearvaig Pipe Club, we couldn’t wait to try it. During the pipe show we was so busy and never managed to try any, but eventually we got to try some. The tobacco started out with a conversation between Sgt Matron and Bob Gregory (Samuel Gawiths), the idea was a tobacco that brought the spirit of the traditional both. A blend of dark Virginias with a little latakia and of course some scotch. The musky, smoky flavours of the tobacco are given a spicy side thanks to the whisky. While many comparisons may be carried out with Navy flake, to use it seems a different balance of the tobaccos and not just the spirit (Navy Flake is topped with Rum).

You'll read about the aroma upon opening the tin, well for me it was a most underwhelming experience!! Still, I stuffed it all into an airtight jar, finally had a bowlful, didn't get much from it and left it alone for a week! I then had another "bash" at it but this I time I loaded up my meerschaum....and IMHO, if you own one, use it here!
Chalk n cheese come to mind (as in the smoking parallels), with this experience being absolutely fantastic (as have all subsequent smokes). This is peaty, spirity (sweetness), tary and smoky....it needs trying but I've fallen in love with it and I shall be ordering more next week (although I shall also be trying the Navy Flake as well)! Worth buying a tin full, or just a sample even, if you're a more cautious individual. Just be careful of smoking it in briar, where ghost flavours can run against it......
