The Stanwell “Army Mount” 109 is a flat bottomed ball with gentle curve. A polished nickel mount, houses the Faux Army Mount and 9mm filter system. Finish with a deep and glossy brown stain, with subtle hints of red. A very attractive pipe which has brandy and prince feel to it. (No designer is assigned to this shape.)
The standard mortise and tenon fitting for pipe stems is fine for most. Once you have finished your pipe you can let the bowl cool, before removing the stem for storage or cleaning. If however you are on the battle field, you do not have the luxury to do this and removing a standard stem from a hot pipe is not recommended. To allow foot soldiers and cavalry the chance to have a smoke when they can and for as long as possible, the army mount was created. The mouthpiece usually features a slight taper, but no tenon. The bowls fitting (mortise) is often fitted with a metal or bone/antler mount. This stops the fitting being based on the contact with the bowl and more onto the mount. This allows the stem to be removed hot or cold and put back in the same conditions. The Stanwell take on the Army Mount, like many European makers now really should not be classed as such. The use of the 9mm filter makes it almost impossible to use a true army fitting. A standard 9mm filter tenon is used to hold the mouthpiece to the pipe, with the nickel band just acting as a decorative feature. No matter what our take on the fitting is, this is still a beautiful pipe that we just had to have.
