When people think of the Sherlock Holmes, they instantly imagine the Calabash.
The large hollow chamber allows for the smoke to swirl round and cool before being smoked. This combined with the Meerschaum makes for a very cool and dry smoke. The inner chamber also collects any other moisture and keeps the tobacco dry in the bowl. A briar splice sits between the Calabash and Stem, adding a more rigid and firmer connection for the (ebonite) stem. The large meerschaum bowl I removable, allowing the pipe to be taken apart to completely dry out and remove and debris (ash & dottle).
The Calabash pipe offers the coolest and driest smoke available, thanks to the mixture of materials. The effectiveness of these pipes is now emulated with Briar in the “Reverse Calabash” pipes, now produced by some of the world’s finest artisan carvers.
There are many cheaper Calabash pipes on the market and many of these use lower quality materials in the production. Produced by Strambach in Vienna (Austria) for Comoys, the Meerschaum bowl is made from encapsulated Meerschaum.
