Product Description

When Glynn stopped making GQ Blends back in 2016 it felt like the end of an era. Glynn had been blending for over 6 years, not only got GQ Tobaccos but also as previous jobs he worked. Since he stopped, we have been inundated with requests for alternatives and I know Glynn has too. So we decided to do something about it and collectively we have come up with a solution.

Introducing the GQ Blends “Blend it Yourself Kits”. The same* high quality blends made by Glynn, but packed as component tobaccos. All you need to do to recreate these blends is mix the tobaccos together, let them settle and smoke. *Some of the blends have had to be tweaked due to discontinued tobaccos and lack of additional toppings or pressing. The kits come with all the tobacco and instructions that you need to create the blend.

Askwith Mixture

This was one of the biggest selling GQ Blends Glynn initially produced. The tobacco was made in conjunction with its namesake, Chris Askwith of Askwith pipes. Most VaPer (Virginia & Perique) blends are much the same. A blend of light virginia's with a small helping of Perique (around 5% usually) . So to make this a “Big Boys VaPer” Glynn & Chris created a blend which made more use of steamed Virginia with 20% of Perique.

As you probably know Askwith started life as a Kake, but as this is being mixed by yourself, we can only supply this as a mixture. Those more advernterous out there, can easily make a small press to recreate the iconic Askwith Kake.

How to prepare GQ Blends “Blend it Yourself Kits”

“The most important aspect of mixing tobaccos is cleanliness, molds can grow on tobacco easily. So always make sure your mixing bowl and hands are not only clean, but also dry - Glynn Quelch

  • Take a clean and dry mixing bowl and empty out the contents of each component tobacco inside

  • Some tobaccos come with flakes, you have a choice here. We suggest you run down to a ribbon cut, but you can leave as broken flake if you want (although we only suggest this where you get a lot of flake, not a small bit)

  • Mix the tobaccos together, it helps if you pull the tobacco apart as you go. Kentucky for one tends to clump up, so you need to keep mixing and pulling apart. Keep doing this until its look uniform all over. Then when you think it's done, carry on for a few more minutes.

  • Once fully mixed, you can transfer the tobacco back into the white pouch supplied and close the zip seal (it's pretty heavy duty, so ideal for several weeks)

  • You should allow your tobacco to settle/marry for two weeks minimum, but nothing stopping you having a small bowl while you are waiting. It's actually pretty interesting to see how they change over a short period of time.

  • Once you have waited long enough (or as long as you can!), you can start smoking the tobacco.

  • If you wanted to cellar these tobaccos, you can seal the white bag. Glynn used to use a high tech pair of hair straighteners (ceramic plated version) to seal above the zip lock.

  • Obviously we can longer supply you with Glynns iconic Kakes, but we will do the blends as mixtures. So those resourceful among you can make a small press and recreate Askwith Kake in all its glory at home.
