Like many New World cigar brands, Luis Martinez started life in Cuba when in 1876 Don Luis Martinez opened his first cigar factory. Martinez started rolling cigars at the age of 12, by age 20 he started his own factory and by 25 he had brought the San Geronimo Tobacco plantation. Luis Martinez cigars sold very well all over North America until the revolution and state ownership of the tobacco trade. Like many other Factory & Plantation owners, farmers, rollers, brokers and workers in the tobacco trade, Martinez left for “Little Havana” in Tampa.
One of the biggest promoters of the Martinez’s cigars, was Thomas Marshal the then American Vice President was quoted “"the brand which makes me forget the cares that infest the day." A quote with featured on many Martinez adverts in following years.
The first Martinez factory was destroyed by a hurricane and they quickly rebuilt using Hurricane and Fireproof methods. Sadly due to labour strikes, the building was never finished and Martinez went out of business. Luckily JC Newman rescued the brand, along with many other former Cuban brands which would have faded into the history books.
To this day Luis Martinez cigars are produced in the high tech PESA factory in Nicaragua and are sold to over 40 countries around the world.
