  1. Should be named Balkan Lite 3 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Nov 2013

I was quite excited when I first encountered this tobacco online, and eagerly awaited its arrival over the Atlantic. Peterson's Old Dublin is a quality english blend, and very consistent in its presentation. (I'm partial to robust latakia blends)

Upon opening the tin, the usual good presentation of Peterson, with crinkled paper and all the fixins. However, this was the wettest tobacco I have ever opened (that was not a sticky aro)
This had me surprised, because most english blends tend to be quite dry and ready to smoke. The smell from the tin was a bit fusty-musty. There is more than just a pinch of perique in here... but I suspect its not the St. James version. There is latakia, but not in such a large amount to be dominant. The rest of the makeup is red virginia.
I had to let this dry for nearly an hour before it was packable, and even then it was not the driest smoke. I have a feeling the tins could age well, because of the moisture and the dominant virginia base. As a right out of the tin smoke, I find its underwhelming.
This offering from Peterson's of Dublin does not live up to the moniker of a Balkan, which in my mind, is usually a rich blend of oriental, latakia, and perique, carried by the virginia. Here the virginia dominated all the other flavours, and that surprised me, because usually Latakia is the big lad in the room.
If a rich "balkan" type tobacco is what you are looking for, then this is not for you. For the same money you could get a tin of MacBaren's Vintage Syrian, or Dan Tobacco's Bill Bailey's Balkan, or Ashton's Artisan's Blend, and be rewarded with a true balkan delight.
However, if you are a milder virginia fan or aromatic fan who is looking to venture into a different flavourhood without straying too far from home, then perhaps this balkan-lite blend may suit you. For me however there are other blends with more muchness.
